چکیده

With an estimated 226,870 diagnoses and 39,510 deaths in 2012, breast cancer remains the most commonly occurring and second most lethal cancer among women in the United States (Howlader et al., 2011). Among those with breast cancer, patients aged less than 40 remain a particular challenge due, in part, to the inherent biologic aggressiveness of their tumors. Young women have tumors that are more likely to be high-grade histopathologically; have a higher mitotic rate with lymphovascular invasion (LVI); have more pathologic LNs; and are more likely to be hormone receptor (HR) negative/HER2 negative (“triple negative”; Colleoni et al., 2002; Carey et al., 2006; Anders et al., 2008, Kurian et al., 2009; Lund et al., 2009; Telli et al., 2011; Ademuyiwa et al., 2013; de la Rochefordiere et al., 2013). Moreover, the patients are more likely to be black, have a family history of breast cancer, and have less favorable outcomes (Adami et al.,

Population-based study of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy and survival outcomes of breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND Despite increased demand for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM), the survival benefit of this procedure remains uncertain. METHODS We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to identify 107 106 women with breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy for treatment between 1998 and 2003 and a subset of 8902 women who also underwent CPM during the same per...

Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy: current perspectives

There has been an increasing trend in the use of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) in the United States among women diagnosed with unilateral breast cancer, particularly young women. Approximately one-third of women <40 years old are undergoing CPM in the US. Most studies have shown that the CPM trend is mainly patient-driven, which reflects a changing environment for newly diagnosed ...

Evaluation of Factors Related to Short-Term and Long-Term Survival of Breast Cancer Patients by Mixture Cure Model

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Today, with advancements in medical sciences, increasing the cure probability of patients as well as increasing survival time is an important goal of cancer treatment. Therefore, in this study, in addition to examining patients’ survival, we investigated the cure probability of breast cancer patients and its prognostic factors u...

Motivations for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy as a function of socioeconomic status

BACKGROUND Despite no demonstrated survival advantage for women at average risk of breast cancer, rates of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) continue to increase. Research reveals women with higher socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to select CPM. This study examines how indicators of SES, age, and disease severity affect CPM motivations. METHODS Patients (N = 113) who under...

Long Term Outcomes of Total Hip Arthroplasty in Young Patients under 30

Background:  We aimed to report outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in very young patients under the year of 30.   Methods:  Thirty patients (45 hips) with various indications for THA were retrospectively reviewed radiologically and clinically and analyzed regarding survival, reasons of failure, factors associated with outcomes and postoperative complications.   Results:  Within a mean fol...

Better contralateral breast cancer risk estimation and alternative options to contralateral prophylactic mastectomy

The incidence of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) has increased among women with breast cancer, despite uncertain survival benefit and a declining incidence of contralateral breast cancer (CBC). Patient-related reasons for undergoing CPM include an overestimation of the risk of CBC, increased cancer worry, and a desire to improve survival. We summarize the existing literature on CBC ...
